With Ross' passing last month, current Seattle Opera general director Speight Jenkins dedicated this month's three performances of the "Ring" cycle to his memory. Seattle acquired the moniker "Bayreuth West" 30 years ago when Seattle Opera's founding director Glynn Ross had the idea of establishing a Wagnerian foothold in this country. Tickets have been sold out since November. This year's traditional-minded, "green" production by director Stephen Wadsworth - a reprise of the one that premiered in 2001 with some major and minor tweaks - has attracted Wagner fans from 49 U.S. And it's one of the few that have the artistic and financial means to do it right. Outside of Bayreuth, Germany, the cherished musical shrine to Richard Wagner, Seattle Opera is one of the few companies where you can hear the four-opera, 16-hour "Ring" cycle in the summer.
